Devotion Under Fire
Abbad ibn Bishr was a devout Ansari of the Aws. On the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa, standing guard at the mouth of a valley, he was praying when an enemy archer shot him — once, twice, three times; each time he drew out the arrow and continued his prayer, unwilling to cut short his recitation, only rousing his companion when the wounds grew grave. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 471 — Kandhlawi — Abbad continues his prayer though struck by three successive arrows on guard duty. On a pitch-dark night, leaving the Prophet ﷺ with Usayd ibn Hudayr, a light shone from his staff to guide his way home. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 3 · pp. 610 — Kandhlawi — a light shines from the staffs of Abbad and Usayd on a dark night.
Martyr of Yamamah
At the Battle of Yamamah he called the Ansar to rally and, with Abu Dujana and al-Bara ibn Malik, led some four hundred of them into Musaylama’s garden, where he was martyred — his body so covered in wounds that he was known only by a mark. 3 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 518 — Kandhlawi — Abbad rallies the Ansar at Yamamah and is martyred, his body covered in wounds.
