A Cousin of the Prophet ﷺ
Abdullah ibn Jahsh was a cousin of the Prophet ﷺ — son of his aunt Umayma bint Abd al-Muttalib — and the brother of Zaynab bint Jahsh, who would become a Mother of the Believers. He was among the early Muslims and emigrants and fought at Badr.
His Prayer at Uhud
On the eve of Uhud, Abdullah said to Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas that they should pray together, each making one wish while the other said “Amin.” Sa’d asked to meet a fierce foe, overcome him, and take his spoils. Then Abdullah prayed to meet a mighty enemy who would overpower and kill him and cut off his nose and ears — so that when he stood before Allah on the Day of Resurrection and was asked how he lost them, he could answer that it was in the way of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Both prayers were answered the next day: Sa’d later saw Abdullah’s nose and ears strung on a thread, and judged Abdullah’s prayer the better of the two. 1 Stories of the Sahabah · pp. 131–132 — Zakariyya Kandhlawi — the mutual du'a of Abdullah ibn Jahsh and Sa'd before Uhud; Abdullah asks for martyrdom and mutilation in Allah's cause, and it is granted.
