Chief of Tayy

Adi ibn Hatim was the chief of the tribe of Tayy and son of the famously generous Hatim. A Christian, he at first disliked the Prophet’s ﷺ rise and fled toward the Byzantines; but when a raiding party captured his sister and the Prophet ﷺ freed her, she urged Adi to go to him. He came to Madinah, and the Prophet’s ﷺ gentle, humble manner won his heart, and he embraced Islam. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 93–96 — Kandhlawi — Adi flees the Prophet, his sister is captured and freed and urges him to go; his conversion after seeing the Prophet's humility. 2 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 235–236 — Najeebabadi — Adi ibn Hatim, chief of Tayy, embraces Islam.

Virtues in the Hadith

At their meeting the Prophet ﷺ foretold a peace and dominion Adi could scarcely imagine — and Adi lived to witness it:

فَإِنْ طَالَتْ بِكَ حَيَاةٌ لَتَرَيَنَّ الظَّعِينَةَ تَرْتَحِلُ مِنَ الْحِيرَةِ حَتَّى تَطُوفَ بِالْكَعْبَةِ لاَ تَخَافُ إِلاَّ اللَّهَ

”If your life is long, you will surely see a woman in a howdah travelling from al-Hira until she circumambulates the Ka’ba, fearing none but Allah” — and the treasures of Kisra will be opened.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3595 · Book 61 (Merits), Hadith 102 · USC-MSA: Vol. 4, Book 56, Hadith 793 · narrated by Adi ibn Hatim

Adi said he saw the first two come true, and himself shared in the conquest of Kisra’s treasures.
