One of the Three Left Behind

Hilal ibn Umayya was among the three sincere men who stayed back from Tabuk — with Ka’b ibn Malik and Murara ibn al-Rabi’. The Prophet ﷺ ordered the Muslims to boycott all three. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 458 — Kandhlawi — Hilal ibn Umayya among the three Tabuk-laggards.

During the fifty days of the boycott, his wife came to the Prophet ﷺ and pleaded to be allowed to serve him, for he was an old man with no servant — and the Prophet ﷺ permitted it, on the condition that she not be near him. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 458 — Kandhlawi — Hilal's wife's plea to serve him during the boycott.

And to the Three Who Were Left Behind

Then Allah revealed:

“And to the three who were left behind, until when the earth — vast as it is — became straitened for them, and their own souls became straitened for them, and they realised there was no refuge from Allah except in Him — He turned to them in mercy that they might repent…” (Surah al-Tawbah 9:118)

3 Seerat-e-Mustafa · Vol 3 · pp. 122–124 — Idris Kandhlawi — Surah al-Tawbah 9:117–118 revealed concerning the Three Left Behind at Tabuk.
