A Commander of the Conquest of Egypt
Maslama ibn Mukhallad was a young Ansari of the Khazraj. When Amr ibn al-As asked Umar for reinforcements in the conquest of Egypt, Umar sent four thousand men with four commanders, each — he said — the equal of a thousand: az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, al-Miqdad, Ubada ibn al-Samit, and Maslama ibn Mukhallad. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 3 · pp. 673 — Kandhlawi — Umar sends four commanders each worth a thousand to reinforce Egypt; Maslama ibn Mukhallad among them. He settled in Egypt, where he lived out his life and died.
