In His Defence
When the rebels closed in on Uthman’s house in 35 AH, Naila addressed them: “Whether you kill him or leave him, he spends his whole night reciting the entire Qur’an in a single rak’ah of prayer.” 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 3 · pp. 137 — Kandhlawi — Naila's words to the rebels about Uthman's worship. As the swords rose against him, Naila threw out her own hand to catch the blade — and her fingers were cut off and fell away. The second stroke martyred the Caliph. 2 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 417 — Najeebabadi — Naila's fingers cut off as she shields Uthman; the second blow martyrs him.
