The First Martyr of Islam

Sumayya bint Khayyat was the wife of Yasir and mother of Ammar, of the household of Banu Makhzum, and among the earliest to accept Islam. With her family she was tortured on the burning ground of Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ passing by to give them glad tidings that their abode would be Paradise. 1 Seerat-e-Mustafa · Vol 1 · pp. 91 — Idris Kandhlawi — the family of Yasir tortured; the Prophet's glad tidings of Paradise. She would not renounce her Lord, and Abu Jahl killed her with his spear — so that Sumayya became the first soul to be martyred in Islam. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 301–302 — Kandhlawi — Abu Jahl kills Sumayya; she is named the first martyr of Islam. After Abu Jahl was slain at Badr, the Prophet ﷺ told her son Ammar that Allah had killed his mother’s killer.
