Son of the Martyr of Mu’ta

Abdullah ibn Ja’far was the son of Ja’far ibn Abi Talib (at-Tayyar) and Asma bint Umays. When his father was martyred at Mu’ta, the Prophet ﷺ cared for the orphaned family and prayed that Allah bless Abdullah in his trade — a prayer borne out in the wealth that passed through his hands. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 3 · pp. 384 — Kandhlawi — after Ja'far's martyrdom the Prophet prays Allah bless Abdullah in his trade.

An Ocean of Generosity

He became proverbial for generosity. When an Iraqi chief, grateful for Abdullah’s intercession with Ali, sent him forty thousand dirhams, Abdullah returned every coin, saying: “We do not sell our good deeds.” 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 2 · pp. 282 — Kandhlawi — Abdullah returns 40,000 dirhams, saying 'we do not sell our good deeds'. He lived a long life in Madinah and died there, among the last of the Banu Hashim of his generation.
