Martyr of Uhud, Washed by the Angels
Hanzala ibn Abi Amir was a young Ansari of the Aws, newly married. On the morning of Uhud he had only just risen from his wedding night — before he could perform the ritual bath — when the alarm of battle reached him; he left at once, sword in hand, and plunged into the fighting until he was martyred. 1 Stories of the Sahabah · pp. 134–135 — Zakariyya Kandhlawi — Hanzala leaves his wedding night for Uhud without ghusl and is martyred. Afterward the Prophet ﷺ told the Companions that the angels were washing Hanzala; asked, his wife explained that he had gone out in a state requiring the bath. From that day he was honoured as Ghasil al-Mala’ika — the one washed by the angels. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 3 · pp. 548 — Kandhlawi — the Prophet says the angels are bathing Hanzala; his wife explains the missed ghusl; hence Ghasil al-Mala'ika.
