Grandson of the Prophet ﷺ

Husayn ibn Ali was born in 4 AH, the younger son of Ali and Fatimah and a grandson dearly loved by the Prophet ﷺ. He and his brother Hasan were the children the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would carry on his shoulders, and whom he named the two masters of the youth of Paradise (see Virtues in the Hadith). Of Husayn in particular the Prophet ﷺ declared a closeness like no other — “Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn.”

The Stand at Karbala

After the death of Mu’awiya, Husayn withheld his allegiance from Yazid and set out toward Kufa, whose people had called him. He was intercepted in the desert of Karbala, and there, on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH, he was martyred — his own half-brothers among those who fell fighting at his side. 1 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 499 — Najeebabadi — Husayn at Karbala; Ali's sons (Husayn's half-brothers) martyred fighting with him there. His martyrdom became one of the most grief-laden memories of the Ummah, and he is honoured as a shahid (martyr) and a master of the youth of Paradise.

Virtues in the Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ bound Husayn’s honour to his own person:

حُسَيْنٌ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْ حُسَيْنٍ

”Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn; Allah loves whoever loves Husayn.”

Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3775 · Book 49 (Chapters on Virtues), Hadith 174 · narrated by Ya’la ibn Murra · graded Hasan (Darussalam)

And he named the two brothers the foremost of the young in Paradise:

الْحَسَنُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ سَيِّدَا شَبَابِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ

”Al-Hasan and al-Husayn are the two masters of the youth of Paradise.”

Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3768 · Book 49, Hadith 167 · narrated by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri · graded Sahih (Darussalam)

Legacy

Through Husayn the blessed line of the Prophet ﷺ continued, and his stand at Karbala is remembered across the Ummah as a byword for sacrifice and steadfastness. He rests at Karbala, where he fell.
